    2009/10 Match Reports

6th March – Borras Park Rangers – Away

    Coedpoeth 3 – 2 Llay

Once again we only had 11 players, but everyone battled well and we were unlucky not to get something out of the match, against the league leaders. We were caught with two early goals with the ball going over the top of our defence, with only a small pitch we had to change our way of playing to stop this threat with our midfield dropping back into defence and our defence dropping with the kick, which strengthened our defensive line. Which kept the score at 2-0 until just before half time when good play and a cross down the left wing found Ben free in the box to steer the ball into the net to make it 2-1?

The second half was much the same as the first with Borras again pushing to score two scrambled goal in a crowded box, but again Llay came back with this time good work down the right from Robert and Scott with the final ball finding Luke in the box who calmly slotted it past the keeper, to make it 4-2. This lead to a frantic last five minutes, but good play from both sides did not result in any further goals with the match ending 4-2 to Borras

A good team performance with the Llay goal scores Luke 1 and Ben 1

    27th February – Coedpoeth – Away

    Coedpoeth 3 – 2 Llay

For the first time for a number of games we had a substitute and we made a good start taking a 1 – 0 lead early in the first half with a good pass out wide to Dan who cut in to slot the ball past the Coedpoeth keeper. However the lead did not last long with a ball over the top finding their forward to make it 1-1, which is how it stayed until half time. The second half started much the same as the first with both sides not creating much in front of goal, then as Llay started t apply pressure Coedpoeth broke down the left and a good cross saw them go 2-1 up, with Llay pushing for the equaliser we were again caught on the break to go 3-1 down. A good show of strength from Scott and a good shot which was only partly saved by the keeper saw Llay bring it back to 3-2. Llay pushed for the last 5 minutes looking for the equaliser with Coedpoeth happy to kick the ball out to waste time. However the pressure did not come to anything with Coedpoeth hanging on to win 3-2.

20th February - Borras Park Rangers - Home

    Llay 0 – 3 Borras Park Rangers

Well done to the 10 players who turned up today, you battled well and could have got something from the match except for decisions not going our way and some hard luck in front of goal.

The first half saw some good end to end football and at times you could not tell we only had 10 men on the pitch; however Borras eventually took a 1-0 lead after the defence were left over stretched. But 1-0 down at half time with 10 men was nothing to be ashamed about.

The second half was started the same as the first with both teams having chances, however it was Borras who secured the break through taking a 2-0 lead. Llay then had a couple of chances when Scott who was a handful all match broke through one on one with the keeper only to see one going over the bar and the other being weel saved by the keeper.

However playing with 10 men began to take its toll and Borras eventually ran out 3-0 winners. Well done to Charlie who was once again outstanding in goal and Matt Lee who is getting better every week.

13th February - Marford and Gresford - Home

    Llay 3 – 0 Marford and Gresford

Another good team performance saw us run out 3 – 0 winners against our neighbours Marford and Gresford.

In the first half it was end to end play with both sides looking to attack, with Marford and Gresford being given the chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, which was brilliantly saved by Charlie in goal. Then a quick throw out by Charlie to Dan sent Scott clear through on goal who calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 1 – 0 at half time.

The second half started much the same as the first with both sides looking for a goal, however it was Llay who found the second goal of the game with Ben putting Scott through with a one on one with the keeper who came out bravely only to see the ball go past him into the open net. Unfortunately the keeper clashed with Scott and hd to be replaced.

Most of the remaining chances went Llay’s way with our defence holding out well, continued pressure up front eventually paid off when Ben scored Llay’s third to make the game 3 – 0 which is how it ended. Well done everyone a great team performance.

    6th February - Llangollen - Home

    Llay 7 – 0 Llangollen

Thanks to a very good referee making a common sense decision we managed to get the game on despite having a large puddle just out side of the penalty area.

The puddle did come into play a couple of times but did not really have a big impact on the game. Llay got off to a good start quickly taking a 2 – 0 lead through goals from Luke and Scott, before we added third just before half time. However it was not all one way and Charlie in goal had to pull off a number of top class saves.

The second half started the same as the first with both teams having a good amount of play, however with Llangollen pushing forward their back four were left a little exposed which lead to both first Luke and then Scott grabbing their hatrick. Our final goal came from a corner which we were working on in training, with a well taken corner by Robert finding Ben on the near post who turned the ball past the keeper.

A good team performance with the Llay goal scores Luke 3, Scott 3 and Ben 1

    30th January - Chirk U14 - Away (League Cup)

    Match Off - Snow

23 rd January - Ruthin - Away (Tesco Cup)

    Ruthin 7 – 4 Llay

On the third attempt we managed to get our Tesco cup match on which saw us travel to an undefeated Ruthin, with only 11 players. Thank you very much to the players who turned up and battled to play some of the best football I have seen since we started to play 11-a-side, everyone played together as a team.

The first 15 minutes saw end to end play with Ruthin having the better of the chances, leading to some brilliant saves from the Charlie Williams the Llay Keeper, the early pressure paid off on 16 minutes with Ruthin taking a 1 – 0 lead, which was quickly followed by second and third. This spurred a come back from Llay with a brilliant solo goal from Scott Davies who picked up the ball on half way beating 4 players before slotting home the goal to make it 3-1 at half time.

The second half started in the same frame as the first with Ruthin taking a 4–1 lead, before Llay staged another come back first with a good header from Ben Robinson following good work down the left. Llay then made it 4-3 when the Llay keeper played an early long ball, which was latched onto by Scott Davies to make it 4-3.

The tie was then brought level after the Ruthin keeper failed to deal with a long range shot from Scott Davies to give Scott his Hatrick and level the score at 4-4.

Llay then had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty which was well saved by the Ruthin keeper. This seamed to spur on Ruthin who scored 2 quick goals in two minutes to take the score to 6-4. This was the signal for Ruthin to make a number of substitutes with about 5 minutes remaining in the match, the fresh legs gave Ruthin the extra momentum to go forward and score a 7th goal in the closing minutes of the match to finish the match 7-4 winners.

Good luck to Ruthin in the next round

    12th December - Marchwiel - Home

    Llay 2 - 7 Marchwiel

After a long break due to the wet weather we got off to a bad start conceding a goal in the first minute. After this bad start we did settle down and start to play some good football, but once again Marchwiel proved too strong. We did however manage to be the firs team to score against Marchwiel in the League this season with goals from Luke and a first goal for Scott following is transfer from Buckley, to end the Match 2 -7

    31st October - Maelor U14 - Away

    Maelor U14 8 - Llay 4

Today saw us drawn against a very tall Maelor under 14 side, how ever it was Llay under 13's who took an early lead with Luke slotting a through ball past the Maelor keeper, Maelor then pulled one back before Dan scored our second to put us 2-1 up before once again Maelor drew level. Llay then went 4 - 2 up with goals from Luke and Matt. Then with 20 seconds to go before half time Maelor pull a goal back to make in 4-3. Despite making some good chances in the second half the age difference showed through with Maelor scoring 5 goals in the second half to win the match 8-4.

24th October - Marford and Gresford - Away

    Marford and Gresford 2 - Llay 1

A great first half performance saw us take a 1-0 lead with Ben Robinson scoring from outside of the box, to make it 1-0 at half time.

However in the second half M&G used the wind to there advantage to grab a 2-1 win

    10th October - Llangollen - Away

    Llangollen 3 - Llay 3

Llangollen took an early lead after a mix-up at the back, but we put ourselves back in the game to lead 2-1 at half time. Once again defensive errors cost us two goals in the second half and going into the last 10 minutes we losing 3-2, before a great strike from Ben Robinson put us level again. Not a great display of football.

3rd October - Borras Park Albion - Away

    Borras PA 4 - Llay 0

Once again we saw an improvement, with the first half being a very close match with Borras scoring a scrambled goal with about 5 minutes to go. Everyone did the job that was asked of them and we even managed to play some football in midfield, which is something that we worked on in training.

The second half started badly with a two minute spell that saw Borras score two goals, we then switched back on and played some good football and even created a few chances after some good build-up play. As we pushed forward we left the back exposed which lead to Borras’s 4th goal, where three of their players found themselves unmarked in the box. Everyone put in the effort with some good individual performances coming from Tom who had a tough day against two very quick wingers, Charlie who once again kept us in the match and Rhys who ran the defence.

    26th September - Coedpoeth - Home

    Llay 0 - Coedpoeth 2

We battled a lot better in midfield, with both sides cancelling each other out in the first half. In the second two pieces of bad luck cost us two goals, But once again we could not score at the other end.

Llay Man of the Match - Rhys

    19th September - Marchwiel - Away

    Marchwiel 8 - Llay 0

A poor first half performance saw us go in at half time 6 – 0 down

In the second half we put in a lot more effort and this paid off, with Marchwiel only managing to add a further two goals to their total. In fact if it was not for a couple of cynical challenges when we were through, we might have even scored ourselves. All credit to Marchwiel on a very good display of football.

Llay man of the match has to go to Charlie who was absolutely superb in goal today.

    12th September – Maelor – Home

    Llay 4 - Maelor 0

Well done today, a good start to the season and a great team performance, with great team spirit

All credit to Maelor who despite only having 10 men battled well in the first 20 minutes stopping everything that we put at them, then a wonder strike from Dan put us 1 - 0 up, quickly followed by a second. In the second half Maelor again battled well with some great saving coming from the goal keeper. However we did manage a further two goal with the first coming from Luke and the fourth and his hatrick from Dan
